Direct Educational Overview • Urdu Poetics in 60 Seconds

Classical Urdu poetry is governed by strict mathematical prosody (Ilm-ul-Arooz). Every authentic poem belongs to a distinct structural genre governed by specific rhyme, refrain, and metrical footprints:

مصرع (Misra)

A Single Line

One hemistich. Two misras combine to form a complete couplet (Sher).

مطلع (Matla)

Opening Couplet

Both lines rhyme (AA pattern), establishing the meter, qafia, and radif.

مقطع (Maqta)

Signature Couplet

The closing couplet weaving the poet's authentic pen name (Takhallus).

قافیہ (Qafia)

Rhyming Syllable

Words sharing the core pivot letter (Harf-e-Rawi) that change per sher.

ردیف (Radif)

Invariant Refrain

Exact verbatim phrase anchored after the Qafia throughout the poem.

بحر (Behr)

Metrical Scale

Syllabic acoustic rhythm verified through mathematical scansion (Taqti).

Frequently Asked Questions on Urdu Poetics

What is the fundamental difference between an Urdu Ghazal and a Nazm?▾

A Ghazal consists of autonomous couplets (ash'ar) where each two-line verse is a self-contained unit of thought capable of addressing love, mysticism, or politics independently. In contrast, a Nazm is an organic, continuous poem governed by a single overarching theme (Wahdat-e-Tasur) from start to finish.

How do I distinguish between Qafia and Radif in a poem?▾

Qafia (قافیہ) is the rhyming word that changes from couplet to couplet (e.g., hawa, dawa, saza). Radif (ردیف) is the exact, word-for-word phrase that repeats without change immediately after the Qafia throughout the entire poem (e.g., “kya hai”). The core rule: Qafia rhymes; Radif repeats.

Is every closing couplet of a Ghazal called a Maqta?▾

No. In classical poetics, a concluding couplet is only a Maqta (مقطع) if the poet embeds their formal pen name (Takhallus). If the poet finishes the poem without signing their pen name, the couplet is simply the Aakhri Sher (آخری شعر), not a Maqta.

How can I write high-scoring Tashreeh for Board and CSS exams?▾

Follow our 3-step blueprint: 1) Hawala-e-Kalaam (identify the poet, poem, and central theme), 2) Mafhoom (1-2 sentence literal meaning), and 3) Tashreeh (in-depth socio-literary context, metaphorical analysis, and cross-reference verses). Visit our Academic Tashreeh Hub for detailed worked examples.
