Dil-e-nadan tujhe hua kya hai
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai

Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib's 'Dil-e-Nadan Tujhe Hua Kya Hai' is arguably the most famous and widely sung ghazal in the Urdu language. Composed in a conversational, interrogative meter, Ghalib engages in a witty dialogue with his own naive heart. Blending existential irony with passionate yearning, he questions the very nature of suffering, devotion, and mortal futility with peerless literary flair.
Dil-e-nadan tujhe hua kya hai
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
Hum hain mushtaaq aur woh bezaar
Ya Ilaahi yeh maajra kya hai
Main bhi munh mein zabaan rakhta hun
Kaash poochho ke mudda'a kya hai

Jab ke tujh bin nahin koi maujood
Phir yeh hangama ae Khuda kya hai
Yeh pari chehra log kaise hain
Ghamza-o-ishwa-o-ada kya hai
Shikan-e-zulf-e-ambareen kya hai
Nigah-e-chashm-e-surma saa kya hai
Sabza-o-gul kahan se aaye hain
Abr kya cheez hai hawa kya hai
Hum ko un se wafa ki hai umeed
Jo nahin jaante wafa kya hai
Haan bhala kar tera bhala hoga
Aur darwesh ki sada kya hai
Jaan tum par nisaar karta hun
Main nahin jaanta dua kya hai
Main ne maana ke kuchh nahin Ghalib
Maft haath aaye to bura kya hai

O naive heart, what has truly befallen you? What, after all, is the cure for this deep-seated pain? We are burning with longing, yet the beloved turns away in weary indifference O dear Lord, what bewildering mystery is this? I too possess an eloquent tongue within my mouth If only you would ask what my true petition is! When none exists in the universe save Thee, Then what is this tumultuous spectacle all about, O God? Who are these fairy-faced mortals dwelling on earth? What are these alluring glances, flirtatious charms, and haughty airs? What is this fragrant amber fragrance within those cascading curls? What is the bewitching spell of that kohl-lined eye? From where did this lush green meadow and blooming rose arise? What is the cloud, and what mystery breathes within the breeze? We foolishly place our hopes of fidelity upon someone Who does not even comprehend what loyalty means! Do good unto others, and good shall return to you; What else is the humble prayer of a wandering dervish? I gladly sacrifice my very life and breath for you; Beyond this, I know not what other prayer exists! I readily concede that Ghalib is worthless and of no account, Yet if you acquire him for nothing—what harm could there be?
