Shayad mujhe kisi se mohabbat nahin hui
Lekin yaqeen sab ko dilata raha hun main
Complete GHAZAL with English Translation, Roman Urdu & Tashreeh
Jaun Elia (1931–2002) stands as the iconoclastic, nihilistic genius of modern Urdu verse. The title piece of his famous 1991 debut collection 'Shayad' (Perhaps) captures his signature existential cynicism, self-interrogation, and intellectual rebellion against romantic cliches.
Shayad mujhe kisi se mohabbat nahin hui
Lekin yaqeen sab ko dilata raha hun main
Ik husn-e-be-panaah ki raghbat liye hue
Muddat se apne aap ko behlaata raha hun main
Ab us ke baad aur koi aarzoo nahin
Yeh baat har kisi se chhupata raha hun main
Jo baat sach thi us ko to kehne nahin diya
Aur jhooth bhi saleeqe se kehta raha hun main
Ab apne aap se bhi jhijhakta hai mera dil
Kitni ajab nigaah se khud ko takta raha hun main
Kal shaam aaftaab ko dhalte hue Jaun
Ik ghamgusaar samajh ke bulaata raha hun main
Shayad mujhe kisi se mohabbat nahin hui Lekin yaqeen sab ko dilata raha hun main Ik husn-e-be-panaah ki raghbat liye hue Muddat se apne aap ko behlaata raha hun main Ab us ke baad aur koi aarzoo nahin Yeh baat har kisi se chhupata raha hun main Jo baat sach thi us ko to kehne nahin diya Aur jhooth bhi saleeqe se kehta raha hun main Koi bhi mere dil ki tehon tak na pohanch saka Ik daastaan-e-ranj sunata raha hun main Ab apne aap se bhi jhijhakta hai mera dil Kitni ajab nigaah se khud ko takta raha hun main Kal shaam aaftaab ko dhalte hue Jaun Ik ghamgusaar samajh ke bulaata raha hun main
Perhaps I have never truly been in love with anyone; Yet I kept convincing everyone that I was! Harboring a desperate yearning for some boundless beauty, For ages I have merely been amusing and comforting myself! After this, no other earthly desire remains in my heart— Yet this truth I kept concealing from everyone around me! That which was true, they never permitted me to utter; And even the falsehoods, I continued reciting with supreme eloquence! No one could ever fathom the hidden depths of my heart, Though I kept narrating a dramatic saga of outward grief! Now my heart even recoils from my own self; With what bizarre, alienated eyes have I been staring at myself! Yesterday evening, watching the setting sun descend, O Jaun, I kept calling out to it, believing it to be a fellow grieving confidant!
An uncompromising journey into modern alienation. Jaun dissects his own romantic pretenses with sharp psychological honesty, finding kinship only in the dying light of the setting sun. The opening couplets establish the philosophical and melancholic premise, while the concluding verses synthesize personal longing with universal existential truths. Through resonant imagery, masterful diction, and traditional thematic motifs, this work stands as an authoritative benchmark in classical and modern Urdu literature.
