Composed by 'Shair-e-Inqilab' (Poet of Revolution) Josh Malihabadi, this thunderous anti-colonial anthem became one of the defining rallying cries of South Asian independence. With his unmatched sensory vocabulary and militant rhythm, Josh envisions the collapse of imperial prisons, the shattering of shackles, and the triumphant dawn of human liberation.

Zindaan ki faseelon par gir kar ab sar ko patakti hain lehre
Paaon mein qaid ki bedi hai, sar par hain sitam ki shamsheerein
Baatil ke mehel ab laraztay hain, aiwan-e-sitam ab dolta hai
Mazloom ka ghussa jaaga hai, mehkoom ki himmat bolti hai
Keh do yeh ghulami ke thekedaron se, ab raat ka parda chaak hua
Khurshid-e-jahan-taab ubhra hai, ab zulm ka qissa paak hua!

Does the vast prison of Hindustan tremble? Takbeers roar across the land! Weary of tyranny, the captives shatter their heavy chains amidst cries of revolt! Crashing against the towering prison ramparts, waves beat their defiant heads; Though shackles bind the captive feet, and swords of oppression hang above the brow! The marble palaces of falsehood tremble, the halls of tyranny sway in terror; The wrath of the oppressed has awakened, the courage of the subjugated speaks aloud! Declare this to the brokers of slavery: the dark veil of night is torn asunder! The world-illuminating sun has arisen, and the chapter of tyranny is ended forever!
