Composed in Rangoon exile by the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar as he lay dying far from his beloved Delhi, this devastating ghazal is South Asia's supreme elegy on exile, loss of homeland, and mortal grief. The iconic closing couplet—'Kitna hai bad-naseeb Zafar dafn ke liye / Do gaz zameen bhi na mili koo-e-yaar mein'—remains unmatched in world literature.

Complete Roman Urdu Text (رومن اردو)

Umar-e-daraaz maang ke laaye the chaar din
Do aarzoo mein kat gaye do intezar mein

Qismat mein qaid likhi thi fasl-e-bahar mein

In hasraton se keh do kaheen aur ja basein
Itni jagah kahan hai dil-e-daaghdaar mein

Complete English Translation

I had petitioned for a long lifespan, and was granted merely four brief days: Two slipped away in longing, and two in weary waiting! How tragically ill-fated is Zafar for his final burial: That not even two yards of ground were granted to him in the land of his Beloved! The caged nightingale harbors no grievance against the gardener, nor against the hunter; For imprisonment was decreed in its destiny during the very blossoming of spring! Go whisper to these lingering unfulfilled desires to dwell somewhere else; For where is there room left in this wounded, bleeding heart to house them all?

Meaning & Literary Explanation

Bahadur Shah Zafar laments imperial exile. Life is distilled into four days: two spent in desire, two in waiting. The tragic climax is being denied even two yards of earth for burial in one's beloved homeland.
