Yeh aarzoo thi tujhe gul ke roo-ba-roo karte
Hum aur bulbul-e-betaab guftagu karte
Complete GHAZAL with English Translation, Roman Urdu & Tashreeh
Composed by Khwaja Haidar Ali Atish, the preeminent master of the classical Lucknow school, this dazzling romantic ghazal is celebrated for its musical splendor, verbal jewel-crafting (Murassa-Sazi), and chivalric dignity. Its opening line—'Yeh aarzoo thi tujhe gul ke roo-ba-roo karte / Hum aur bulbul-e-betaab guftagu karte'—remains universally recognized as one of the most melodious love couplets in South Asian literary history.
Yeh aarzoo thi tujhe gul ke roo-ba-roo karte
Hum aur bulbul-e-betaab guftagu karte
Payaambar na mayassar hua to khoob hua
Zaban-e-ghair se kya sharh-e-aarzoo karte
Meri tarah se mah o mehr bhi hain aawara
Kisi habeeb ki yeh bhi hain justaju karte
Jo dekhte teri zanjeer-e-zulf ka aalam
Aseer hone ki azaad aarzoo karte
Na poochh aalam-e-bargashta tali'ee Aatish
Barasti aag jo baaran ki aarzoo karte

This was my deepest desire: to seat you face-to-face with the rose, While I and the enraptured nightingale conversed in jealous awe. It proved a blessing indeed that no courier was found for my message; For through a stranger's cold tongue, how could I ever unfold the longing of my soul? Wandering like me in restless orbit, the moon and sun roam the skies; They too, it seems, wander in search of some beloved's radiant grace. Had the free spirits of the world witnessed the captivating beauty of your tresses, Even the unbound would yearn to become prisoners in your silken chains! Ask not, O Atish, of the devastating extent of my ill-fated fortune; For fire would rain from heaven had I ever prayed for soothing showers of rain!
Atish synthesizes romantic admiration with refined Lucknow lyricism. He elevates the beloved above nature itself: the rose would pale before the beloved's countenance, and the moon and sun are merely planetary lovers searching for divine beauty.
