Composed by Nawab Mirza Khan Dagh Dehlvi, this famously witty ghazal captures the playful exasperation of being constantly stood up by a fickle lover. Its proverbial opening line—'Aap ka aitbar kaun kare / Roz ka intezar kaun kare' (Who could ever place trusting faith in you? Who could endure this daily, endless waiting?)—is universally quoted across South Asia.

Complete Roman Urdu Text (رومن اردو)

Aap ka aitbar kaun kare
Roz ka intezar kaun kare

Jaan dene ki baat karte hain
Yun mohabbat ka pyaar kaun kare

Teergi raat ki kehti hai
Be-wafa se qarar kaun kare

Dagh is daur-e-be-wafai mein
Apna dil daaghdaar kaun kare

Complete English Translation

Who could ever place trusting faith in your fickle word? Who could bear this daily, exhausting waiting anymore? People casually speak of surrendering their life in devotion; Yet who truly fulfills such sacrificial love in practice? The dark gloom of the lonely night whispers to the soul: Who would seek sweet peace from a faithless companion? In this faithless, self-serving era, O Dagh, Who would willfully wound and scar their own heart?

Meaning & Literary Explanation

Dagh displays his trademark colloquial charm. The poem rejects the hollow drama of daily broken promises, culminating with a clever pun on his pen-name 'Dagh' (stain/scar) in the final couplet.
