Composed by Nawab Mirza Khan Dagh Dehlvi, this iconic ghazal is celebrated across South Asia for its conversational spontaneity, witty complaint, and musical lilt. Its immortal opening couplet—'Ghazab kiya tere waade pe aitbar kiya / Tamaam raat qayamat ka intezar kiya'—perfectly depicts the sleepless agony of placing blind trust in a fickle beloved's promised rendezvous.

Yeh aaina to sar-e-bazm taar taar kiya

Fasana-e-shab-e-gham un ko kya sunate Dagh
Ke jab woh aaye to khud subh ne pukaar kiya

Complete English Translation

What fatal folly I committed to place trusting faith in your promised word; Through the entire night, in agonizing sleeplessness, I awaited the Day of Judgment! Making me smile with sweet hopes, you left me drenched in tears on the night of union; Offering sweet consolations, you plunged my restless heart into deeper turmoil! When did your cruel ears ever listen to the silent cry of my shattered heart? Before the eyes of the entire gathering, you fractured this mirror into bleeding shards! How could I ever recount the tale of that sorrowful night of waiting to the beloved, O Dagh, When by the time that presence finally arrived, the dawn itself cried out that the night had fled!

Meaning & Literary Explanation

Dagh balances playful romantic complaint with musical perfection. The broken promise turns the night of expected bliss into an agonizing vigil, capturing the universal comedy and tragedy of romantic courtship.
