Suna hai log use aankh bhar ke dekhte hain
So us ke shehr mein kuch din thehar ke dekhte hain
Complete GHAZAL with English Translation, Roman Urdu & Tashreeh
Composed by Ahmad Faraz, this intoxicating masterpiece is celebrated as one of the supreme achievements of 20th-century romantic Urdu poetry. Employing dazzling sensory metaphors, Faraz celebrates the beloved's beauty, captivating speech, and graceful posture with peerless musicality.
Suna hai log use aankh bhar ke dekhte hain
So us ke shehr mein kuch din thehar ke dekhte hain
Suna hai bole to baaton se phool jhadte hain
Yeh baat hai to chalo baat kar ke dekhte hain
Suna hai raat use chaand takta rehta hai
Sitaare baam-e-falak se utar ke dekhte hain
Suna hai hashr hain us ki ghazaal si aankhein
Suna hai us ko hiran dasht bhar ke dekhte hain
Suna hai us ke badan ki taraash aisi hai
Ke phool apni qabaayein katar ke dekhte hain
Rukay to gardishein us ka tawaaf karti hain
Chale to us ko zamaane thehar ke dekhte hain
Ab us ke shehr mein thehrein ke kooch kar jaayein
Faraz aao sitaare safar ke dekhte hain

I hear that people gaze upon the beloved with breathless, longing eyes, So in the beloved's city, let us linger for some days to see for ourselves. I hear that when the beloved speaks, blossoms cascade from gentle words; If this be true, let us step forward and converse to see for ourselves. I hear that through the silent night, the pale moon stares transfixed; And radiant stars descend from the high roof of heaven to gaze upon this grace. I hear that devastating beauty resides in those gazelle-like eyes, And wild deer from across the endless desert turn back to catch a glimpse. I hear that the exquisite contour of that silken form is such That blossoms slice their own fragrant petals in awe to look upon this splendor. When this grace pauses, cosmic rotations revolve in devotion all around; When this grace walks, entire eras stand motionless to watch in reverence. Shall we linger longer in this enchanted city, or take our final leave? Come, O Faraz! Let us read the traveling stars of our destiny to see.
