Composed by Syed Mohsin Naqvi, this dignified ghazal celebrates the noble strength of silence and moral maturity in the face of betrayal. Refusing petty public accusations or bitter recriminations, Mohsin declares that choosing silent withdrawal over undignified arguing is the ultimate proof of a great soul (Zarf).

Complete Roman Urdu Text (رومن اردو)

Yeh mera zarf hai ke main khamosh hoon ab tak
Warna tere har fareeb ka charcha sar-e-aam hota

Mohsin ab us gali mein jaana chhod diya hum ne
Jahan izzat ka janaza sar-e-bazaar hota

Complete English Translation

It is my noble forbearance alone that keeps me silent until now; Otherwise, the scandal of every betrayal of yours would be proclaimed in public squares! I had offered unwavering loyalty solely for the sacred honor of keeping faith; Otherwise, a mocking carnival of our romance would have unfolded every dusk. Now that we have parted, no bitter grievance or complaint remains against you; Had I been petty like you, your name would have been dragged through public shame! Mohsin! We have ceased walking down that deceptive street forever Where the funeral of self-respect was paraded through the open marketplace!

Meaning & Literary Explanation

Mohsin Naqvi contrasts noble magnanimity with vindictive pettiness. The lover possesses the power to ruin the betrayer's reputation, but chooses noble silence (Zarf) because exposing betrayal diminishes one's own spiritual stature.
