Composed by modernist master Munir Niazi, this iconic ghazal stands as a monument to intellectual autonomy and refusal to conform to societal hypocrisy. Its legendary opening line—'Kisi ko apne amal ka hisab kya dete / Sawaal saare ghalat the jawab kya dete' (Why should we render an account of our deeds to anyone? All the questions were flawed; what answers could we offer?)—is celebrated as a proverb of philosophical defiance across South Asia.

Sawaal saare ghalat the jawab kya dete

Hawa ki zad pe the bujhte hue diye jaise
Hum apni umar ka baqi nisaab kya dete

Woh ek khwab tha aankhon mein so bikhar bhi gaya
Ab is shikasta basarat ko khwab kya dete

Kharab waqt ke lamhon ko hum ne kaat diya
Kisi ki chashm-e-taghaful ko taab kya dete

Munir hum ne to sehra mein shaam kar daali
Ab is ujaad safar ka saraab kya dete

Complete English Translation

Why should we have rendered an account of our deeds to anyone? All their questions were fundamentally flawed; what answers could we have offered? Like dying, flickering oil lamps placed in the direct fury of the gale, How could we have sustained the remaining curriculum of our fragile lives? It was merely a fleeting dream in our eyes, and so it dissolved and shattered; To this fractured vision now, what new illusion could we offer? Through the agonizing hours of bitter times, we endured and passed our days; To someone's haughty, indifferent eyes, what submission could we offer? O Munir! In the lonely wilderness, we watched the quiet dusk descend; Upon this desolate journey, what mirage could we chase anymore?

Meaning & Literary Explanation

Munir Niazi refuses to justify his existence to a corrupt society. If the questions of society are based on prejudice and hypocrisy, silence and detachment become the only moral response.
