Penned by Parveen Shakir, the preeminent female voice of modern Urdu literature, this beloved ghazal explores the blossoming of romantic intimacy and the delicate social vulnerability of public gossip. Her iconic couplet—'Kaise keh doon ke mujhe chhod diya hai us ne / Baat to sach hai magar baat hai ruswai ki'—remains universally quoted across the subcontinent.

Kaise keh doon ke mujhe chhod diya hai us ne
Baat to sach hai magar baat hai ruswai ki

Woh kaheen bhi gaya lauta to mere paas aaya

Ab to us raah se woh shakhs guzarta bhi nahin
Jis ne har gaam pe mujh ko khabar-e-ra'anai ki

Complete English Translation

From lane to lane, the rumor of our secret acquaintance has spread wide; Yet like pure fragrance, the beloved welcomed and embraced my being. How can my trembling lips admit that the beloved has abandoned me? The words are indeed true, yet speaking them invites shameful public disgrace. Wherever the wanderer roamed, upon return it was to my embrace; This alone is the endearing grace of my unfaithful, fickle lover. Granted, your quiet embrace remains cold like your unfeeling heart; Yet in freezing ice, I have nurtured and kindled the warm flames of love. Now through that familiar path, that cherished presence passes no more, The one who at every gentle step awakened me to the wonder of beauty.
