Woh to khushbu hai hawaon mein bikhar jayega
Mas'ala phool ka hai phool kidhar jayega
Complete GHAZAL with English Translation, Roman Urdu & Tashreeh
Published in Parveen Shakir's sensational 1976 debut 'Khushbu' (Fragrance), this ghazal became a landmark in Urdu literature by presenting a distinctly authentic female perspective on love and vulnerability. Shakir likens the beloved to an elusive fragrance that disperses into the wind, posing the heart-wrenching question: 'The real dilemma is for the abandoned flower—where shall the flower go?'
Woh to khushbu hai hawaon mein bikhar jayega
Mas'ala phool ka hai phool kidhar jayega
Hum to samjhe the ke ik zakhm hai bhar jayega
Kya khabar thi ke rag-e-jaan mein utar jayega
Woh hawaon ki tarah rasta badalta hi raha
Hum samajhte rahe woh laut ke ghar jayega
Koi dastak na sada aur na diya dehleez par
Ab ke tanhai ka mausam to guzar jayega
Phir usi mod pe aa kar ruki kashti-e-hayat
Dekhna yeh hai ke toofaan kidhar jayega
Woh to khushbu hai hawaon mein bikhar jayega Mas'ala phool ka hai phool kidhar jayega Hum to samjhe the ke ik zakhm hai bhar jayega Kya khabar thi ke rag-e-jaan mein utar jayega Woh hawaon ki tarah rasta badalta hi raha Hum samajhte rahe woh laut ke ghar jayega Koi dastak na sada aur na diya dehleez par Ab ke tanhai ka mausam to guzar jayega Shaam ko jab bhi khulega tera gham ka daftar Aik aansu mere rukhsaar pe dhar jayega Phir usi mod pe aa kar ruki kashti-e-hayat Dekhna yeh hai ke toofaan kidhar jayega
He is merely a fragrance—he will disperse freely into the wandering winds; The real agony belongs to the flower: where shall the forsaken blossom go? I had foolishly believed it was merely an ordinary wound that would heal; How could I foresee that it would seep deep into my very jugular vein? Like shifting breezes, he constantly altered his restless pathways; While I naively kept hoping he would eventually return home! No knock upon the door, no familiar voice, no welcoming lamp on the threshold; Yet somehow this desolate season of loneliness will pass away too! Whenever the ledger of your painful memories is opened in the evening, A solitary tear will gently place itself upon my cheek! Once again the fragile boat of life has stalled at that perilous crossroad; Now remains to be seen in which direction the brewing storm will surge!
