Composed by bohemian ascetic Saghar Siddiqui from the pavements of Lahore, this deeply spiritual ghazal laments the moral blackout of modern society. Its opening cry—'Charagh-e-Toor jalao bada andhera hai / Bhatak raha hai musafir bada andhera hai' (Kindle the sacred flame of Mount Sinai, for overwhelming is the darkness! The mortal traveler is wandering lost, for overwhelming is the darkness!)—pleads for transcendent illumination amidst moral corruption.

Charagh-e-Toor jalao bada andhera hai
Bhatak raha hai musafir bada andhera hai

Koi to aaye jo tootay dilon ko jod sakay
Dilon ke shehr basao bada andhera hai

Wafa ke naam pe looti hai zindagi jin ki
Unhi ko ab to hansao bada andhera hai

Sitam ki kaali ghatayein chhuti nahin ab tak
Koi charagh jalao bada andhera hai

Hamein to khaak mein milna tha mil gaye Saghar
Ab is jahaan ko bachao bada andhera hai

Complete English Translation

Kindle the divine beacon of Mount Sinai, for overwhelming is the darkness; The mortal traveler is wandering lost, for overwhelming is the darkness! Let someone come who can mend these shattered, weeping hearts; Populate the ruined city of human souls, for overwhelming is the darkness! Those whose lives were robbed and devastated in the sacred name of fidelity; Bring smiles at last to their weeping faces, for overwhelming is the darkness! The heavy black clouds of tyranny have not yet lifted from the horizon; Kindle some flame of justice, for overwhelming is the darkness! We were destined to merge with humble dust and so we have, O Saghar; Save this broken world now if you can, for overwhelming is the darkness!

Meaning & Literary Explanation

Saghar appeals for divine intervention. Physical candles cannot banish the moral depravity of modern exploitation; only the transcendent fire of Mount Sinai ('Charagh-e-Toor') can guide the lost soul. The poem closes with poignant self-abnegation.
