میر ببر علی انیس 1803ء میں فیض آباد میں پیدا ہوئے۔ وہ میر حسن کے پوتے اور میر خلیق کے فرزند تھے، یعنی ان کا پورا خاندان شعر و سخن کا گہوارہ تھا۔ انیس نے اردو مرثیے کو اخلاقی بلندی، رزم و بزم کے مناظر، اور انسانی جذبات کی عکاسی کا ایسا شاہکار بنایا جس کی مثال پوری عالمی شاعری میں کم ہی ملتی ہے۔ ان کے مسدس کے بند فصاحت و بلاغت اور لغتِ اردو کا مستند ترین سرمایہ ہیں۔ ان کا مشہور مصرع 'نمکِ خوانِ تکلم ہے فصاحت میری' اردو بیان کی معراج سمجھا جاتا ہے۔ 10 دسمبر 1874ء کو لکھنؤ میں وفات پائی۔

Mir Babar Ali Anees was born in Faizabad into a distinguished family of poets. Moving to Lucknow, Anees transformed the Marsiya (elegiac epic poem) from a devotional ritual into one of the highest literary forms in world literature. Composing in majestic six-line stanzas (Musaddas), Anees mastered dramatic characterization, military warfare, human pathos, and nature painting with an unprecedented vocabulary of over 100,000 distinct words. Renowned for his immaculate recitation (Taht-ul-Lafz), Anees shares the title of 'Khuda-e-Sukhan' (God of Poetry) in classical Urdu literature.
